APPENDIX II

STATISTICS ON USE OF NOSE ART NAMES

Excerpt from an email from Wally Forman on September 28, 1999 :

Folks ask me from time to time for a "Hit Parade" type of list of the most popular B-24 nose art names.  They want the top 10 or the top 50, but it's easier to just list them in the order of frequency with which they appear in my collection.  This list was created about 5 years ago, and since then some additional 500 have come into my collection, but I don't believe the popularity list has changed significantly.  Out of the 7800 on the list 5 years ago, tied for first place appearing 28 times each was Pistol Packin' Mama and Shoo Shoo Baby.  Then, in order,

27 times - Star Dust

26 times - Lady Luck

24 times - Heaven Can Wait and Tailwind

23 times - Sleepy Time Gal

22 times - Sad Sack

21 times - Our Baby and Ain't Misbehavin'

20 times - Daisy Mae, Hell's Belle, Patches, and Shady Lady

19 times - Paper Doll

17 times - Boomerang, The Joker, Liberty Belle, The Shack, and Umbriago

16 times - Fearless Fosdick and Stinky

15 times - Bad Penny, Balls of Fire, Dragon Lady, Double Trouble, and Duchess

14 times - B.T.O., Consolidated Mess, heavenly Body, Little Joe, and Worry Bird

13 times - Lonesome Polecat

12 times - Black Magic, Ford's Folly, Queen of Hearts, and Thumper

11 times - Classy Chassy (is), Leading Lady

10 times - Big Time Operator, Eager Beaver, Hard to Get, Little Lulu, Satan's Sister, Snafu, Sweet Sue, Thar She Blows, Thundermug, and Tondelayo

9 times -    Agony Wagon, Big Ass Bird, Bugs Bunny, Coral Princess, Flak Happy, Flak Magnet, Midnight (ite) Mistress, Queenie, Southern Comfort, Tarfu*, Wolf Pack

8 times -    Black Widow, Blasted Event, Blonde Bomber, Captain & the Kids, Easy Maid, Gemini, Fertile Myrtle, Feudin' Wagon, Hairless Joe, Lucky Strike, Playmate, Red Hot Riding Hood, Ruptured Duck, Sack Time, Time's A' Wastin', and Uninvited

Doesn't make any difference, but it's kinda fun to remember the names that were most popular 55 years ago!
